International Competition and Exhibition to Mark the 150th Birth Anniversary of Boris Schatz

This year 2016 marks three important events related to the activities of Boris Schatz – his 150th birth anniversary; 120 years since the founding of the State School of Drawing in Sofia, and 110 years since the opening of Bezalel Art School.
On this occasion in 2015, Can New Artists Collegium Israel in cooperation with the Israel Medal Association announced an International Medal Competition in memory of the sculptor. As co-organisers were invited students and lecturers from the Medal Sculpture Studio at the National Academy of Art in Sofia, Vilnius Academy of Arts and The Medal Association of Lithuania.
In August and September 2016, in Telshay (Lithuania), Veliko Tarnovo (Bulgaria) and Beit Yanai (Israel) hosted medal symposia with the participation of one lecturer and one student from the partner countries.
The created medals - 39 in total, were cast in triplicate. In 2016, the medals were presented to the International Jury comprising 9 members from each country. The counting of votes took place in Israel in the presence of the Lithuanian and Bulgarian cultural attachés.
The competition winners will be announced on 20th December, on the eve of Boris Schatz’ birth, while in the capitals of Lithuania, Bulgaria and Israel exhibitions of the competition medals will be opened simultaneously.
The exhibition in Sofia will be opened in Academia Gallery on 20th December at 06:00pm, whereas a videoconferencing with the exhibitions in Vilnius and Jerusalem will be conducted. The exhibition takes place in the spirit of the 120th anniversary since the founding of the National Academy of Art.
