Exhibition: 90 Years Since the Birth of Rumen Skorchev

The National Academy of Art presents the jubilee exhibition 90 YEARS SINCE THE BIRTH OF RUMEN SKORCHEV in memory of Acad. Rumen Skorchev (1932–2015).

Academia Gallery presents paintings, prints, illustrations and drawings covering the artist's entire creative career. Rumen Skorchev was born on 7 October 1932 in Targovishte (Bulgaria). In 1964, he graduated with a degree in Illustration from the Art Academy under Prof. Petar Chuhovski and Prof. Vesselin Staykov. From the beginning of the 1970s, he participated in all general art exhibitions in Bulgaria, as well as in the international biennials in Florence, Krakow, Biela, and others. From 1977 onwards, he was leading the Illustration and Book Design Atelier at the National Academy of Art. In 2009, he was granted the title Academician (Full Member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences).

Rumen Skorchev has illustrated over 200 books based on classic literary works by A.S. Pushkin, P. Yavorov, F.G. Lorca, Omar Khayyám, Petrarch, Ch. Baudelaire and many other. Several generations of children have grown up with illustrations in the books by Brothers Grimm, Karel Čapek, Asen Raztsvetnikov. His most significant achievements in this field are included in the exhibition.

The exhibition includes the painting cycle "Breakfast on the Grass", illustrations to The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám and Grimms' Fairy Tales, an album with Rumen Skorchev's poetry and drawings, etc.

Acad. Rumen Skorchev has been awarded over 40 international and national awards. Works of his are owned by the National Gallery, Sofia; Sofia City Art Gallery; Uffizi Gallery, Florence (Italy); Albertina Gallery, Vienna (Austria); Victoria and Albert Museum, London (UK); National Gallery, Washington (USA); National Library of France, Paris; Museum of Fine Arts, Curaçao (Netherlands Antilles), and many other. On 6 September 2015, the artist passed away in Sofia.

On the occasion of the jubilee exhibition, Suzana Nikolova has authored a monograph entitled "The Visual Language of Rumen Skorchev". The publication is realised with the financial support of the National Endowment Fund "13 Centuries Bulgaria", Stovi 1 EOOD, and under the Programme for the Scientific and Artistic-Creative Activity of the National Academy of Art for year 2022.
