Exhibition in memory of the Bulgarian artist Kiro Mavrov

12 May – 3 June 2022

Exhibition opening 12.05.2022 (Thursday), 6:30 pm

Kiro Mavrov (1949–2021) is a Bulgarian artist, illustrator, cartoonist, painter and graphic artist, born in Varna, Bulgaria. Over the years, Mavrov has illustrated over 60 books, including Grimms' Fairy Tales; Ronia, the Robber's Daughter by Astrid Lindgren, Tales for Naughty Children by Jacques Préver, Parkinson's Law, and many more. Mavrov showed a preference for illustrating comic and satirical texts. His artwork has been presented in group and solo exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad.

Kiro Mavrov left this world unexpectedly in December 2021, leaving unfulfilled plans for exhibitions to be organised in Bulgaria and foreign countries.

The memorial exhibition partially fulfills those plans as it focuses on his personal self as an artist. The selection of works presents different creative periods and techniques and gives the viewer a look at his personal searches as an artist. The drawings and prints manifest his individual style of graphic expression, and the sharp satirical intensity through the power of free drawing with ink, nib and pencil. The oil paintings convey the charm of counterpoints in our surroundings. The kinetic sculptures, most of which unseen so far, combine the artist's passion for the sensоry and his love of mechanics and movement. Аn unifying aspect of the exhibition is Kiro Mavrov's characteristic, sharp individual style, pleasing to the eye and mind-provoking.
