International Art Workshop on Encaustic Painting in the town of Ahtopol

In September 2025, students and teachers from the National Academy of Art and the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of St. Cyril and Methodius – Skopje took part in the International Art Workshop “Encaustika” held at the creative base of the National Academy of Art in Ahtopol. The project leader is Assoc. Prof. Lyubomil Draganov, PhD, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the National Academy of Art.
Participants from the University of Skopje are the teachers from the Department of Painting and Transmedia Practices, Dr. Maria Sotirovska, Assoc. Prof. Angel Mijov, PhD, Assoc. Prof. Slobodanka Stefcheska, PhD, and the student Angela Georgievska, and from the National Academy of Art – Assoc. Prof. Lyubomil Draganov, PhD, Sen. Lec. Stahil Nenov, the students from the Department of Mural Painting, Maria-Nur Rechdan and Ilona Petrova, and the BA alumni of the Department of Painting, Mihail Gavrailov and Simona Vassileva.
During the workshop, the students and teachers worked in the encaustic painting technique – an ancient painting technique based on the use of heated beeswax mixed with dammar resin and pigments. In ancient times, the technique had not only artistic, but also practical applications – it was used to strengthen ship hulls and to impregnate various surfaces.
On 23 September 2025, the created works were arranged in an exhibition, at the opening of which all participants in the international forum were awarded diplomas by Assoc. Prof. Lyubomil Draganov, PhD. During the project implementation, the participants visited the Burgas Branch of the National Academy of Art, where they viewed the ateliers and the gallery at the Branch, having the opportunity to follow the educational process in the various academic courses and to be acquainted with teachers and students at the Academy in the seaside city.
This project was realised within the framework of the 2025 Competition for Funding Projects on the Scientific Research and Artistic Activities at the National Academy of Art.
