The children, divided into two age groups – aged 6 to 10 and 11 to 18 – will work with both current students (Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral students) from various departments and pursuing different programmes at the National Academy of Art, and alumni of the Academy, who have completed a second degree programme in Theory and Practice of Art Education.
Throughout the month of August, the Academy's ateliers – this year in two locations – will be filled with multiple colours and creative emotions. Part of the workshops will be held in the building of the Faculty of Applied Arts and Design at 73 Tsarigradsko shosse Blvd.
The project activities will provide for the children the opportunity to acquire basic knowledge and skills in the following areas:
– Academic – drawing from nature;
– Creative – fine and applied arts ateliers;
– Experimental-creative – team assignments, a happening and workshop programme led by established artists, games;
– Plein air;
– Visits to museums and galleries.
During the Summer Academy, creative workshops will also be held on: Academic Drawing; Painting; Printmaking; Sculpture; Illustration; Comic Strips; Ceramics; Mosaic; Stained Glass; Icon; Dolls and Dollhouse; Ecolandia; Calligraphy; Design – Recycling; Animation; Decoupage; Scenography; Fashion; Textiles; Puppet Theatre, and Computer Graphics for older students.
In addition to the visits to galleries and museums, a plein air "Painting Sofia" will take place in parks and urban spaces.
The workshop programme includes meetings with established artists, including the children's literature author Yulka, the animators and comic strip artists Penko and Sotir Gelev, the artists Kalia Kalacheva, Mina Zlateva and Nora Ampova. Angela Minkova will introduce to the participants Ebru – the ancient Arab technique of painting on water, Zlatka Andreeva will demonstrate the creation of handmade paper, Usha Tsonkova will lead the photography classes.
In 2023, the creative programme is dedicated to the 100th birth anniversary of the epoch-making Bulgarian illustrator Lyuben Zidarov, who has illustrated all the Bulgarian and world classics for children. Also, there has been planned a meeting with his son Filip Zidarov – art critic and with his granddaughter Andreya Zidarov – graduate of National Academy of Art.
For older participants (aged 15 to 18) the Summer Academy offers a special programme.
At the end of August, the best works realised during the project implementation will be presented in an exhibition.
Those children who have taken part in the Summer Academy over the whole duration will receive a certificate accompanied by a discount voucher for the next edition of SAChSS. Children attending the final celebration will receive a special diploma for participation in the Summer Academy.
Should parents wish, warm luncheon can be provided for their children by a catering company with proven quality of services. The menu will also include a vegetarian option. Payment for luncheon is separate from participation fee payment.
Participation fees
– All day – from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm: BGN 40.00;
– Half day – BGN 20.00;
– Two weeks – all day (incl. bonus of 1-day participation free of charge): BGN 360.00; half day: BGN 180.00;
– Full month – all day (23 days, incl. bonus of 3-day participation free of charge): BGN 800.00; half day: BGN 400.00.
Fees include: overhead, teacher and staff fees, and costs of all art, stationery and hygiene materials required to run the project.
Participation fee discounts
– For the second child in a family: 20%;
– For the third child in a family: 50%; for each subsequent child in a family: free of charge;
– For a child with over 50% incapacity (as per a decision of a Territorial Expert Physicians Commission): free of charge; for other children in the family: 50%;
– For a socially disadvantaged child: free of charge upon presenting a relevant document.
Advance payment of fees can be made on the following dates: 27th, 28th and 31st July, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, National Academy of Art, 1 Shipka Street.

Note: The above is applicable only for people who pay the total amount of fees without using social discount.
When using different discounts, payment is made on the spot based on relevant documents: for orphans – parents' death certificate; for children having a decision of a Territorial Expert Physicians Commission – a document showing the decision of a Territorial Expert Physicians Commission; for a large family – the children's birth certificates.
