Department History of Art
Education in History of Art offers training in visual arts and provides insight into modern aesthetic theories and artistic practices, with special emphasis on the study of the landmarks of Bulgarian and world culture.
Students in History of Art graduate with BA and MA degree and are qualified to do art research, as well as to work as museum and gallery curators, art critics and art editors in specialized publications and cultural institutions, as experts in visual arts, managers, professional teachers of History of Art in comprehensive secondary schools, and in specialized high schools of art. As BA and MA degree holders, they are entitled of doing research on, and popularizing of, history, theory, modern development in, and art criticism of, fine and visual arts.
Students in History of Art acquire professional training in a broad variety of fields in their chosen profession, complemented by knowledge and skills in a number of other related research and cultural spheres. They formally obtain their degree by publicly defending a thesis before a specialized body. In addition the students acquire second diploma for professional qualification of teacher in visual arts.
The discipline itself provides opportunities for research mentorship of doctoral students in theory and history of fine arts and allows for further specialization in these fields.
Doctors in History of art are qualified to do specific research on history and theory of fine and visual arts, producing as a result research papers on specific subjects, or on mutually related subjects, which may present a contribution to broader and more general field of History of Art. Their high professional qualification allows them to head, and lead research teams, or programmes of national and international importance, and to work on different aspects of the history or theory of art. They are entitled to teaching at higher schools, universities and academies of art, and to obtaining research degrees. Doctors in History of Art are also entitled to working as editors of scientific literature, and to select and evaluate works of art.
