PARALLELS OF TIME

The Parallels of Time exhibition is presenting paintings created by prominent artists from Stara Zagora during the 20th century–a century of changes, of periods of diverse artistic searches and processes ongoing in Bulgarian fine arts, which unfolded specifically in Stara Zagora, one of the active Bulgarian cities.
The exposition includes artworks by well-known and lesser-known artists–Anton Mitov, Atanas Mihov, Dimitar Gyudzhenov, Nikola Kozhuharov, Vassil Marinov, Vassil Kostakev, Evgeniya Ilieva, Vassil Todorov, Kipro Nikolov, Nikola Arashev, Mario Zhekov, Dimitar Karadzhov, Zafir Georgiev, and others. Included are also texts and excerpts from periodicals, which reveal important moments in the creation of the gallery collection, the development of artistic life in Stara Zagora, and the formation of the city as a regional cultural centre over the years.
Conceptually, Parallels of Time is not a strict tracing of the chronology of artistic life outside the capital city. It is an invitation to look beyond the linear historical course, not so much as a narrative, rather as a reflection of the way in which time flows in history itself and in our understanding of it, its possible interpretation.
The exhibition draws attention to the main, characterising parallel directions examined through the individual creative perspective, sensitivity and artistic pursuits of each of the presented painters. It is an attempt to explore part of the Bulgarian fine arts history – as a network of comparisons between artists who actively participated in the artistic life of Stara Zagora, as a sort of conglomerate of generations and stylistic pursuits, preferred themes and subjects.
