This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Maestro Stefan Kunchev - one of the most prominent Bulgarian artists in the field of applied graphics.
He is the author of many covers of books of folk tales, posters, trademarks and brands, Christmas and other greetings, advertising pages, luxury sheets and letters, stamps, labels, packaging and a lot more. He repeatedly won competitions in different categories of graphic design. His works enjoy worldwide fame and his name appears in the largest encyclopedias on applied graphics. What we see at the exhibition is part of a long-standing creativity that makes us proud that Stefan Kunchev is a Bulgarian and that we are somehow involved with this world famous author.
Kanchev’s talent is highly valued worldwide. There are exhibitions in Moscow, Berlin, Prague, Budapest. In 1967, at an international exhibition organized by the American Institute of Graphic Arts AIGA, he presents 23 logos, the main focus is the logo of Petrol. In 1982 the Japanese magazine Idea devotes the cover and sixteen of its pages. In 1994 Stefan Kanchev was recognized as one of the ten best masters of the logos in the world along with names such as Paul Rand and Saul Bass. The prize is awarded by the International Centre for logos ITC in Ostend, Belgium.
Stefan Kunchev is not only talented, but also extremely hardworking artist. Absolutely all his work, to the last letter he depicted by hand. His love for work is so great that he often happens to paint around the clock without fatigue and exhaustion. The artist's wife says that until the last moment before being admitted to hospital, he draws on his workbench. Stefan Kunchev died on August 22, 2001, a few days after turning 86.
