He graduated from the Academy of Art in Sofia in 1962 with a degree in Monumental Sculpture in the atelier of Prof. Lyubomir Dalchev. In the 1970s, the artist's restless spirit took him to Sweden. Vassil Simitchiev's appearance on the Swedish art scene quickly determined his leading position and recognition as a conceptual artist. Simitchiev develops innovative programmes for art intervention in the social environment and together with university students has realised a number of sculptural installations, artistic actions, performances and conceptual projects in public space. Among his most recognisable and impressive works are Leaning Facade (1979), Colourful Street (1980), Glass Pier in Malmö (1985), Bridge (1996).
