On 27 and 28 February 2023, Charles Murdock Lucas, Scenic and Media Designer for Theatre and Opera, Associate Professor, San Diego State University, Visiting Fulbright Scholar at the Department of Scenography, National Academy of Art, will deliver lectures to students and teachers.

An overview of selected characteristics of modern stage design in the USA, including information on production models on Broadway and Regional Theatre. A question and answer session will follow.

An overview of stage design education in the USA, including courses, curricula, skills, and topics. There will be additional information about the MFA in Design and Technology program at San Diego State University.

A presentation of selected theatrical design work by Charles Murdock Lucas. A question and answer session will follow.
Charles Murdock Lucas is a Scenic and Projection/Integrated Media Designer working across the USA and internationally. Companies include: Sofia National Opera and Ballet (Bulgaria), Sofia Puppet Theatre (Bulgaria), Seoul Arts Center (Korea), Daejeon Arts Center (Korea), The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, San Diego Repertory Theatre, Barter Theatre, Skylight Music Theatre, Flux Theatre Ensemble (NYC), Cygnet Theatre, Virginia Stage Company, PCPA, Village Theatre, and more.
In previous seasons he has served as the Resident Scene Designer for the Ohio Light Opera, Texas Shakespeare Festival, Luna Stage and DCRT. Awards and honors: 2023 Fulbright Scholar in Bulgaria, 2015 Robert L.B. Tobin Director-Designer Prize, 2012 USITT Scene Design Award Sponsored by Rose Brand, and 2011 USITT Young Designers Forum. Work exhibited: 2019, 2011, 2023 Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space, and Mozawa's Y PORTRAITS: AWAKENING in Chicago.
In 2022, he served as the Program Director for San Diego Opera’s OPERA HACK 3.0, an interdisciplinary hack-a-thon and gathering of artists, designers, and technology experts from around the world. He is the Head of Scene Design, Head of Projection/Integrated Media Design at San Diego State University. Member of United Scenic Artists, Local 829 New York, Scenic Design Category.
