PASTE PAPER | Creative Workshop on Paper Colouring at the National Academy of Art – Burgas Branch

2025.12.02

5 December 2025 (Friday), 12:00 am, Poster Atelier
National Academy of Art – Burgas Branch, Magazia 1, Port Complex Burgas

The Paste Paper creative workshop is the final one in a series of workshops dedicated to the various methods of paper colouring and organised by the Department of Poster and Visual Communication. This technique, seemingly not requiring any prior special technical preparation and not involving any complex internal stages, has actually been extremely widespread since the beginning of the 17th century for the creation of all types of bindings – both book covers and some internal and additional elements. The “paste” paper is a type of surface design in which a coloured, viscous medium (usually starch paste) is applied directly onto the surface of a sheet of paper and modified with various tools and techniques to obtain a range of patterns and effects.

This year, the workshop is included in the programme for the Open House Days at the National Academy of Art (4–7 November 2025), and will be open to all those interested in paper colouring.

Within three hours, the students and guests will be acquainted with the history and theoretical aspects of the technology, while some of them will also be able to implement their projects during the practical stage of the workshop. Places for the practical part are limited to the first ten people who have expressed their desire to participate, and those who wish to do so must bring along the following materials: paints (tempera, acrylic), wide flat brushes (any other type, too), as well as all kinds of additional tools (combs, spatulas, sponges, etc.) if desired.

The creative workshop will be led by the lecturer Toma Galov, PhD, who teaches History, Theory and Practice of Classical Bookbinding at the National Academy of Art.

The project "Creative Workshops on Paper Colouring" is implemented within the framework of the 2025 Competition for Funding Projects on the Scientific Research and Artistic Activities at the National Academy of Art.
