RENE block is curator, gallerist and collectors from Berlin. He has worked with world famous artists such as Sigmar Polke, Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter and Nam June Paik. He is closely linked to the study and dissemination of the Fluxus movement and has one of the most important collections of works of this movement. He was director of the Museum Fridericianum in Kassel, Germany; curator of the 4th Biennial Istanbul, Turkey (1995); founder of space TANAS (Berlin) and Edition Block, which was established in 1966 and is one of the oldest projects of that kind for issuance of works by contemporary artists in a limited edition.
In 1964, 22 years of age, René Block opened his first gallery in Berlin and worked with artists like Sigmar Polke, Wolf Fost, Joseph Beuys, Nam June Paik, the international Fluxus group and others.
In 1972 he began performing as an independent curator, and in 1974 was awarded the Prize of the German Association of critics of the 10-year program of the Berlin gallery. In the same year he opened a gallery in New York with the famous performance by Joseph Beuys ‘I like America and America likes me’.
From 1997 to 2006 René Block is director of the museum "Fridericianum" (Kunsthalle Museum Fridericianum) in Kassel.
Over the years he has curated several biennials, starting with the Biennale in Hamburg in 1985, Sydney (1990), Istanbul (1995), notably Guangzhou (Eurafrica / 2ooo), Cetinje (2004), followed by the October Salon in Belgrade (2006) and the Scandinavian pavilion Venice Biennale (2007).
After returning to Berlin in 2008 he founded the space TANAS, a platform for Turkish art and continues its activities in Edition Block, one of the first projects for the production and distribution of the limited editions by contemporary artists, established in 1996. It is also among the founders of space Kunsthal 44 Moen in Denmark and its artistic director.
The lecture is part of a series of Open Art Foundation - Introduction to Contemporary Art - 2015: Curators talk, in partnership with the Goethe Institute in Sofia.
