On the International Museum Day – 18 May, the exhibition 35 Years of METAL at the National Academy of Art was opened at the Earth and Man National Museum in Sofia. The exhibition was presented by Ms Svetlana Encheva, Director of the Museum, Prof. Velislav Minekov, on whose initiative the exhibition was organised, and Miss Emma Slavkova, a third-year student in the Department, in the presence of the Vice-Rector of the National Academy of Art Assoc. Prof. Stefan Belishki, PhD, the Dean of the Faculty of Applied Arts and Design Prof. Arsen Minkov, PhD, many students, lecturers and visitors.
The exhibition is one of the events organised by the National Academy of Art to celebrate 130 years since its founding, and the 35th anniversary of the Department of Metal in the Faculty of Applied Arts and Design.
The presented artworks reveal the rich possibilities of metal as a material, the variety of techniques and creative directions that are actively being worked on and reflect the individual approach and searches of each student. They were realised in the specialised studios of art metal, jewellery and medal sculpture under the guidance of the lecturers Assoc. Prof. Emil Bachiiski, Prof. Velislav Minekov, Assoc. Prof. Zoya Lekova, PhD, Assoc. Prof. Mirena Zlateva, PhD, and Ch. Asst. Prof. Ventsislav Shishkov, PhD.
The event is a continuation of the tradition, established in recent years, to present the best student works created in parallel with the educational process and the holding of end-of-semester appraisement expositions, to the general public. Within the framework of this initiative, a number of successful exhibitions have already been realised in iconic spaces, including the Sredets Gallery at the Ministry of Culture, the Starata Gara (The Old Railway Station) Gallery at the Thracian University in Edirne, and the Academia Gallery of the National Academy of Art.
The exhibition 35 Years of METAL at the National Academy of Art can be viewed until 30 May 2026, and within the framework of the European Night of Museums on 23 May from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm at the Earth and People National Museum.
