THE HISTORICAL COSTUME AS A VISUAL CODE OF THE ERA
2026.05.19

Exhibition by students from the Department of Fashion Design at the National Academy of Art
Exhibition opening: 19 May 2026 (Tuesday), 6:00 pm, Regional History Museum – Sofia
1 Banski Square, Sofia
Communicating different past periods, the historical costume carries a visual message that overcomes its temporal parameters and quasi-limitations to take its rightful place among eternal artistic standards. For the creative imagination, it becomes a mediator of eras and aesthetic wholes, a bridge between what has been experienced and what is waiting to be brought to life, beyond the boundaries of norms, but within the bounds of good taste.
Although different and always changing, the costume provokes another interpretation of new and old, in which the two concepts merge in the dimension of the impermanent.
The students from the Department of Fashion Design offer the Sofia audience a project "The Historical Costume as a Visual Code of the Era" within the academic discipline "History of Costume".
The exhibition presents four Rococo-style costumes, displayed on mannequins and made according to original patterns from the V&A Museum in London, as well as an installation of prototypes of shoes and hats in the same style. The selection and treatment of the fabrics has been made by the students at their own dicretion in order to achieve a maximum effect.
