On 21 May 2026, the lecture "FONT design FOR non-font DESIGNERS" was presented at the Academia Gallery. The event is part of the programme of the National Academy of Art, dedicated to the celebration of 24 May – the Day of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, the Bulgarian Alphabet, Education and Culture, and of Slavic Literature. The educational initiative was implemented under the project "Shared Fonts" funded within the framework of the 2026 Competition for Funding Project on the Scientific Research and Artistic Activities at the National Academy of Art.
The lecture covered both the technological process of creation and the practical application of digital fonts. The doctoral student Lyuboslav Boyanov presented the stages of developing font families. He demonstrated how to work with specialised software programmes and examined the main characteristics and technical specifics, which have to be observed when designing fonts. The practical part of the lecture was presented by Assoc. Prof. Svetlin Balezdrov, PhD. Within the framework of the topic “Digital Fonts in Action”, he explained the principles of OpenType technology and the functionalities of variable fonts (Variable Fonts) in modern design.
The attendees were introduced to useful online tools for testing fonts, as well as key platforms–global and local–which offer rich support for Bulgarian Cyrillic. The lecture became a kind of bridge between font design and its users, helping students and professionals to receive valuable guidance and apply modern typography correctly both technically and aesthetically.
